Western civilization is not being conquered by external enemies. It is committing ritual suicide. The weapon is not a bomb or a blade. It is empathy—weaponized, unbounded, and directed at the wrong targets. Evolutionary psychologist Gad Saad calls it suicidal empathy. Elon Musk has amplified the warning: the fundamental weakness of Western civilization is empathy that has been exploited into a civilizational death wish.

Saad’s book Suicidal Empathy: Dying to Be Kind lays it out without apology. Empathy is a virtue when calibrated. Turned into an absolute, it becomes a pathogen. When a society feels more compassion for the criminal than the victim, for the illegal entrant than the citizen, for the ideological activist than the reality-based majority, it is not being kind. It is choosing extinction.
The Open-Borders Death Wish
Look at the southern border and Europe’s migrant chaos. Progressive elites treat national borders as moral failings. They demand infinite compassion for people who break the law to enter, while sneering at the citizens who foot the bill in crime, strained schools, hospitals, and housing. This is not charity. It is the deliberate prioritization of outsiders over the people who built and maintain the society.
The Real Border Crisis
Saad and others point out the pattern: soft policies that refuse to enforce sovereignty are sold as “empathy.” The result is demographic transformation without consent, parallel societies that reject Western norms, and rising antisemitism and parallel legal systems in places that once prided themselves on Enlightenment values. Civilizations that cannot distinguish between guests and invaders do not last.

Soft-on-Crime and the Homelessness Theater
California and New York provide the clearest laboratory. Cities that once symbolized American prosperity now feature open-air drug markets, tent cities, and repeat offenders cycling through a system designed to “understand” rather than punish. Empathy for the “root causes” of crime and addiction has produced streets that look like third-world dystopias. The productive middle class is told to feel guilty for wanting clean sidewalks and safe streets. That is not compassion. It is contempt for the people who actually hold society together.

The Gender and DEI Cults
Suicidal empathy also fuels the denial of biological reality. Societies that pretend men can become women, that demand children be medicalized in the name of “affirmation,” and that punish dissent as bigotry are not progressing. They are abandoning the basic tools of survival: truth, evidence, and the protection of the young. DEI regimes that prioritize identity over competence do the same in institutions. The West’s competitive edge was built on merit and individual dignity. Replacing that with grievance hierarchies is self-sabotage dressed up as justice.
Post-October 7 reactions exposed the same pathology. After the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, large parts of the Western progressive class immediately pivoted to concern about “Islamophobia” and the feelings of the aggressors’ supporters. Empathy for Jews was treated as optional; empathy for those who celebrated the slaughter was mandatory. That is not moral seriousness. It is civilizational seppuku.
Why It Spreads
The people pushing these policies rarely live with the consequences. Elites in gated communities and university towns virtue-signal while ordinary neighborhoods absorb the crime, cultural erosion, and fiscal burden. As Saad notes, this is maladaptive altruism: feeling good about one’s moral purity while the host society weakens. Historians from Toynbee to Burnham observed that civilizations more often die by suicide than murder. The current West is providing a textbook case.
Musk has called empathy the “empathy exploit”—a bug that adversaries and free-riders can game. Once a culture decides that any boundary, any standard, any preference for its own people is “hate,” it has disarmed itself. Other civilizations do not share this pathology. They protect their interests without apology. The West alone seems determined to prove that infinite tolerance and self-loathing can substitute for survival instinct.
The Only Way Out
Empathy is not the problem. Unbounded, selective, anti-reality empathy is. A healthy society directs compassion first toward its own citizens, its children, and the rule of law that makes prosperity possible. It distinguishes between the deserving and the destructive. It prioritizes competence over identity theater. It enforces borders because nations without borders cease to be nations.
The alternative is continued decline: higher crime, lower trust, cultural fragmentation, and the slow replacement of a high-trust, high-achieving civilization with something poorer, more chaotic, and less free. That is not inevitable. It is a choice. The elites selling suicidal empathy as moral progress are wrong. The rest of us are under no obligation to join their suicide cult.
Wake up. Borders matter. Reality matters. Your own people matter. Anything less is not kindness—it is surrender.
